Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program
The Sexual Assault Program opened the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program May 1, 2003. The program was developed to be a resource to victims of sexual assault in the Bay and Arenac Counties. Before the SANE Program existed, sexual assault victims had to go to local hospital emergency rooms to receive medical treatment and evidence collection. Many victims waited long hours in the emergency room and could only be seen by male doctors. In addition, most victims seen in the emergency room would receive a bill for treatment and evidence collection, totaling $700 to $1,000.
The SANE Program is a valuable resource for law enforcement officers, advocates, courts and most importantly, the sexual assault victim.
