October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The Bay Area Women’s Center has several community events planned in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

 Operation Law Enforcement will kick off the month’s events at 12:00 noon, October 1st, National Day of Unity. Local Law Enforcement agencies will join Bay Area Women’s Center in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Officers will line their patrol cars in the parking lot at Bay Area Women’s Center and Purple Ribbons will be placed on the antennas of the patrol cars as a visual reminder that our community will not tolerate any type of domestic violence. You are invited to join us and receive a free Purple Ribbon to tie on your antenna and show your support.  

Domestic Violence Awareness Walk and Candlelight Vigil.  Join us October 6th to show community support as we honor survivors and remember victims of domestic violence. The Awareness Walk begins at 5:30 at the FP Horak building and proceeds over Veteran’s Bridge to the Bay County Community Center where the Vigil and program entitled, “Building Bridges” will begin at 6:00 PM, followed by a Survivor’s Speak Out. Refreshments will be served and the 3rd annual Purple Ribbon Award will be announced. For Purple Ribbon nomination forms please call 686-4551. 

LUNAFEST, an evening of short films by, for and about women will be featured at the State Theatre on Oct. 13, 2010 at 7:00 pm and a reception will be offered at 6:00 pm. The 90-minute program features nine films ranging from quirky animations to touching documentaries. Tickets are available at the State Theatre Box Office for $10 each or you may purchase tickets online at www.statetheatrebaycity.com. The Great Lakes Bay Region Domestic Violence Programs, Bay Area Women’s Center - Bay City; Underground Railroad - Saginaw; and Shelterhouse - Midland are proud to bring this series of LUNAFEST events to our Great Lakes Bay Region. Hands Are Not for Hitting T-Shirt workshop is scheduled for children to design a free t-shirt by painting their palms and applying them to a t-shirt pre-printed with the words “Hands Are Not For Hitting.” The workshop will be held on: 

October 9th noon – 3:00 PM at The Pumpkin Farm, 4150 Bernthal Rd., Standish. 

The Clothesline Project is a national program started in 1990 to address the issue of violence against women. It gives survivors an opportunity to leave behind some of their pain on a shirt-canvas. The shirts are hung on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of violence against women. Displays are scheduled for:

In Bay Co. - October 19th 10:00 – 2:00 at Bay Regional Medical Center, Bay City and    October 26th 10:00 – 2:00 at SVSU in the Science Building near the Library
