Creating a Safety Plan

Form a Safety Plan

A safety plan is a personalized, practical plan that can help you avoid dangerous situations and know the best way to react when you’re in danger.  If you’re experiencing abuse or are in an unhealthy relationship, you should create a safety plan. Whether you decide to end the relationship or stay, it’s a good idea to empower yourself with the knowledge of how to act in different scenarios.

Power and Control Wheel

power_control_wheel_edited.png

The chart to the left is a way of looking at the behaviors abusers use to get and keep control in their relationships. Battering is a choice. It is used to gain power and control over another person. Physical abuse is only one part of a system of abusive behaviors. Abuse is never a one time event.

This chart uses the wheel to show the relationship of physical abuse to other forms of abuse. Each part shows a way to control or gain power.
